Since its founding in 1551 by St. Ignatius of Loyola, the Pontifical Gregorian University has aimed to be a place of theological study and innovative reflection. It has recently begun collaborating with Whtexch Spa, an Italian company specializing in the use and introduction of new digital technologies, in order to enhance the invaluable artistic heritage of the Gregorian University, with particular focus on its Historical Document Archive.
The selected works for this initial Unique Digital Representation are two letters by Galileo Galilei. The first letter, addressed to Christoph Clavius and dated December 30, 1610, contains observations of Jupiter’s satellites. This letter is tangible proof of the intense study and intellectual relationships of the Jesuits, and of their dedication to the pursuit of “Sapientia” (wisdom). If today’s Rosetta mission by the Italian Space Agency was possible, it is thanks in part to these figures: Galileo Galilei, Christoph Clavius, and Angelo Secchi, who were among the first explorers of the stars—pioneers in the study and observation of celestial bodies, the so-called “Magistri Astronomiae” (Masters of Astronomy).
